A little bit of history...
Croissants are a type of pastry with their origins in France. The history of the creation of croissants has several legendary versions, but here is one of the most widely known.
In 1683, Turkish forces were attempting to conquer Vienna, part of the Austrian Empire. During this time, a local baker near the walls of Vienna noticed that the Turkish troops were tunneling underground during the night to launch an attack on the city. To warn the city's defenders, he decided to create a special pastry in the shape of a crescent, a symbol associated with the Ottoman Empire.
This Viennese baker baked the pastry and filled it with porcelain and wood shavings to create a light and airy texture. The new pastry not only served as a warning but also became a symbol of Vienna's salvation. This pastry was eventually named the "croissant," which means "crescent" in French, to honor the city's deliverance.
While there are many versions of this story, it is one of the most legendary. Croissants have become an integral part of French culinary tradition and baking. Their origin is associated with the events that unfolded in Austria in the 17th century.
